September 2017 – Day 20
Did you have a neighborhood park/playground? Did you play there?
There are many parks in Taranaki.
As children, we never played in local parks, as we had plenty of space to play on our farm.
Stratford has on its boundary two National Parks:
- Egmont National Park (33,543 ha, established 1900) comprises all the land in a 9-kilometre radius of the volcanic mountain Taranaki’s summit and some outlying areas to the north. The symmetrical cone of the dormant volcano is a provincial landmark.
- The Whanganui National Park to the east (via Kohi Saddle, Aotuhia) This park protects the habitat of several thousand North Island brown kiwi, and the also-endangered blue duck.
- We have had many walks in these national parks in Taranaki NZ.
