September 2017 Day 19

Did you have any pets in your childhood home? If so, please tell me about them. If you have a photograph of any of your childhood pets, please share.

No, my parents never allowed us to have a pet.

We lived on a small farm in the early 1950s in Eltham NZ.

Milking dairy cows on 12 acres, at first it was cream then later on whole milk.

We also had a poultry farm where we reared our own chickens, so in my early years, I handled a lot of day-old chickens which involved a lot of work keeping them healthy, it was very easy for them to get a chill and become sick, as they were under a heat lamp.

So you can say chickens were my pets, I adored them, not the hard work cleaning out the hen houses every weekend.
