Insects are a class (Insecta) a three-part body head, thorax, and abdomen

More than a million described species, representing more than half of all known living organisms

The number of extant species is estimated at between six and ten million

Insect pollinators are essential to the life cycle of many flowering plant species

Without insect pollinators, the terrestrial portion of the biosphere (including humans) would be devastated.

Note: Other terrestrial arthropods, such as centipedes, millipedes, scorpions, and spiders are sometimes confused with insects since their body plans can appear similar, sharing (as do all arthropods) a jointed exoskeleton.

However, upon closer examination, their features differ significantly; most noticeably, they do not have the six-legged characteristic of adult insects.
