I Write Because
I write because I’m searching for those years when I lost my school education, the day I turned fifteen.
You may be wondering why I’m writing about this, well this is lesson one for the next twenty days
I write because…
Here’s my story.
It was a Monday morning 10 September 1955, I was getting dressed for school.
I was in a bit of a hurry as I had forgotten to finish the speech that I was preparing to read out in my classroom, so I was going to finish it before I caught the school bus to Stratford High School in Taranaki NZ.
When my father walked into my bedroom, not my mother unusual it caught my off guard.
This was one of the biggest shocks of my life.
Dad quietly informed me that I wouldn’t be going back to school, that he had got a job for me.
He said, “get dressed in your tidy clothes I will be taking you to your new job”.
Then I said if I didn’t get this job, he would be putting me into housekeeping in other people’s home.
I just didn’t believe this, I knew nothing about this job he had got me, I was terrified.
When I asked him why he was taking me away from school, which I was really enjoying, he said that they could no longer keep me and I needed to earn my own keep.
Even now sixty years later this memory, as I’m writing this has brought tears to my eyes, I will never forget it.
I worked for three years at this bookshop, earning three pounds a week for the first six months, I never saw my wages, every payday my mother would put out her hand, for me to give her my hard earned pay.
I could write a whole lot more about my teen years, but this will do for now.
So that is why I write – to try and turn sadness of my lost school days into learning, all I missed out on, like how to use English words the right way, so that one day I will be able to write a book or novel.
I started a new WordPress blog in January, and I was writing most days, but many things have happened in the last couple of months and it has thrown my off track, at the moment I have a mental block on writing, so I’m taking on this course to get me back into writing every day.
